Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers are an iconic pest that bring to mind the time of the biblical locust. With long legs, perfect for covering great distances, grasshoppers can endanger wide areas of plant life. These insects possess destructive capabilities that can seem to resemble a nuclear bomb in localized areas.  When you take pride in your lawn or garden, you have to protect your investment. So, if you live in the Mesa area, that first sighting definitely qualifies making a call to Mesa Pest Control.

Grasshoppers come out when you do, in the spring. Most grasshoppers can’t live through winters, so they have eggs waiting all through the cold season that hatch as early as temperatures permit. They emerge as fairly mature nymphs, already programmed to leap and eat. As they mature, they develop wings, and with them, the ability to cover miles, eating every growing thing in their way. In their most destructive years, grasshoppers will literally decimate whole fields of crops, as well as personal gardens.

While not particularly dangerous, grasshoppers can bite people. They have strong jaws, designed to never stop eating, and their bite can be quite painful. Grasshoppers are related to crickets, and they can chirp with their wings and legs in the same way. While their music isn’t necessarily bothersome, if too many set up their orchestras in your backyard, the volume can become distressing.

Grasshoppers are pests because of their great mobility, but also because they have have adapted in such a way as to allow them to avoid predators. With their large eyes, grasshoppers have an impressive periphery vision and surprisingly powerful eyesight. Their sturdy exoskeleton also protects them as they move at high speeds, usually far out in front of unlucky pursuers.

If grasshoppers are appearing to become a problem, get a Mesa Exterminator to get those pesky populations under control fast. If you’ve had them eradicated in the past, you’ll still want to call, periodically, because those populations are just in remission. Prevention of that next infestation will save you money and aggravation.
